We’re looking for people just like you to join our green digital team for a hackathon this April! Lead by maritime industry leaders, DNV and Astrup Fearnley and held at the one of the world’s most anticipated maritime events, Nor-Shipping, we will be exploring how data-driven decision making can help the maritime industry reduce harmful emissions to air.
Tell me more!
You might be thinking: “why does maritime matter?” Good question! Did you know that between 80-90% of the world’s trade is carried by sea? While ships are considered the most energy-efficient way of moving these goods, the sheer magnitude of maritime transport also means that it has a significant impact on global emissions. If left unchecked and unregulated, shipping could account for over 20% of global CO2 emissions by 2050. There is therefore an expectation on the industry to reduce its’ carbon intensity by at least 40% by 2030, pursuing efforts towards 70% by 2050, compared to 2008.
How can I make a difference?
Definitive change is a team effort. We’re inviting students, researchers, and early-stage entrepreneurs with a keen interest in programming to be part of a two-day long hackathon during Nor-Shipping (April 5-6), including presentations and an optional kick-off and award ceremony. Here, you will be given exclusive access to the Emissions Prediction Calculator API, a tool developed by DNV and Astrup Fearnley for the maritime industry, as well detailed data on ships, voyages and more. Utilizing these resources, we challenge you to explore how they can be used for decision-making and lead to more sustainable shipping.
What can I expect?
Throughout the hackathon, you will get to apply creative problem-solving skills and work with data analytics, and other innovative tools. You will get to hack alongside teams and partner institutions such as DNV, Astrup Fearnley, Microsoft, Tekna, and students from UiO and NTNU. What’s more, you’ll be exposed to the exciting tech startup scene represented by Katapult Ocean and the winning team will be selected by a jury and rewarded with a six-month membership with the leading startup community in the Nordics; Mesh Community.
And don’t worry! Prior knowledge of the industry is not necessary; shortlisted teams will be provided further insight into the context and challenge.
How can I apply?
The application process is simple: just fill in the form with your name, contact details and a sentence on why you, or your team are the right person(s) for the hackathon. Upon registration you will receive an email asking you to submit your CV.
Hurry! The deadline for applications is March 25, 2022.
